History of the Fee
A series of discussions and meetings involving the CLA Student Board, College of Liberal Arts, Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and the Office of the Registrar, culminating in June 1996, resulted in a decision to implement an Infotech fee. Its goal is to provide an excellent educational computing environment for undergraduate students in the college. The fee was set at $45 per quarter in 1996-97; and planned to increase by steps to $75 over 2 years with seniors being exempt in the first year of implementation. The fee rate was developed from projected costs of maintaining and expanding computer labs and classrooms. In order to keep pace with inflation, the fee for the 2003-04 academic year was raised to $100.
Also in 2003-04, the College of Liberal Arts instituted a graduate student Infotech fee. With a similar goal as the original undergraduate fee, it focuses on providing an exceptional instructional and research computing environment for graduate students in the college.
Technology fees help maintain and expand college computer labs, facilitate production of multimedia educational materials and fund CLA technology advances.
CLA Student Technology Fee for 2007-08
- All undergraduates taking 6 or more credits $100.00
- All undergraduates taking less than 6 credits $50.00
- All graduate students taking 6 or more credits $100.00
- All graduate students taking less then 6 credits $50.50
Is this fee only applicable to CLA?
No. Each college at the University charges a similar fee of its students. CLA's fee was considered to be appropriate given the number of students enrolled and the needs of those students in terms of technology-based learning. See "Technology Fees" at OneStop for more information.
